Getting Started
How do I create a passport photo?
Creating a passport photo is simple and takes just a few steps:
- Open the maker and upload a photo of yourself by clicking the upload area or dragging and dropping your image.
- Select your country from the dropdown menu. The tool will automatically set the correct photo dimensions for that country's passport requirements.
- Optionally, click “Remove Background” to replace your background with a clean white backdrop.
- Adjust the zoom, position, and other settings until your photo looks correct.
- Switch to the “Sheet” tab to see a printable layout with multiple copies of your photo.
- Click “Download” to save your photo or sheet.
What kind of photo should I upload?
For best results, start with a well-lit photo taken against a plain, light-colored background. Make sure your face is clearly visible, centered, and not obstructed by hair or accessories. Higher resolution photos (at least 600×600 pixels) produce better results.
Do I need to create an account?
No. Free Passport Photo Maker requires no signup, no account, and no registration. Just visit the website and start creating your photo immediately.
Photo Processing
How does the background removal work?
Our tool uses an AI model that runs directly in your browser to detect and remove the background from your photo. It works best with photos where there is clear contrast between you and the background. The AI processes everything locally on your device — your photo is never uploaded to any server.
The background removal is not perfect. What can I do?
Try these tips to improve background removal results:
- Use a photo with a plain, solid-colored background (white or light gray works best)
- Make sure there is good contrast between your clothing and the background
- Avoid busy or patterned backgrounds
- Ensure good, even lighting without harsh shadows
- Use a higher resolution photo for better edge detection
Can I change the background color?
Yes. After removing the background, you can choose any background color using the color picker in the sidebar. Most countries require a white or light-gray background, but some (like certain visa applications) may require blue or other colors.
What adjustments can I make to my photo?
You can adjust the following settings in the sidebar:
- Zoom: Scale your photo in or out
- Offset X/Y: Move your photo horizontally or vertically to center your face
- Rotate: Straighten a tilted photo
- Brightness: Make the photo lighter or darker
- Contrast: Adjust the contrast level
- Sharpness: Sharpen the image for better print quality

Can I use a custom photo size?
Yes. If your country or use case is not in our preset list, you can manually enter custom width and height values in millimeters, centimeters, or inches. This is useful for non-standard ID photos, visa applications, or any custom photo size requirement.
Are the specifications up to date?
We regularly review and update our country presets to match official government requirements. However, requirements can change without notice. We always recommend double-checking the latest specifications on your country's official passport or immigration authority website before submitting your photos.
Printing Your Photos
How do I print my passport photos?
After creating your photo, switch to the “Sheet” tab to see a printable layout. Select your paper size (A4, Letter, 4R, etc.), then download the sheet. You can print it at home on a color printer or take the file to any local print shop such as Walgreens, CVS, or Walmart for professional printing.
What paper size should I use?
The best paper size depends on your printer and how many copies you need:
- 4R (4×6 in): Most economical for small batches. Standard photo print size at most print shops.
- A4 (210×297 mm): Standard printer paper, fits the most photos per sheet.
- Letter (8.5×11 in): Standard US printer paper.
- 5R, 6R, 8R: Larger photo print sizes for more copies.
What printer settings should I use?
For the best print quality:
- Set print quality to “High” or “Best”
- Use photo paper (glossy or matte) for the best results
- Make sure “Fit to page” or scaling is set to 100% (no scaling) to maintain the correct dimensions
- Select the correct paper size that matches your downloaded sheet
What output formats are available?
You can download your photos in three formats:
- JPEG: Best for printing at photo shops, smallest file size
- PNG: Lossless quality, supports transparency
- PDF: Ideal for professional printing, preserves exact dimensions
Privacy & Security
Is my photo uploaded to your servers?
No. All photo processing happens entirely in your browser. Your photos are never uploaded, stored, or transmitted to any server. When you close or refresh the page, all photo data is permanently deleted from your browser's memory.
Is it safe to use this tool for passport photos?
Yes. Since your photos never leave your device, there is no risk of your personal photos being exposed through a server breach. Your data stays on your computer throughout the entire process.
Troubleshooting
The tool is loading slowly. What can I do?
The AI background removal model needs to download when you first use it. This may take a moment on slower connections. After the first load, it should be faster. For best performance, use a modern browser like Chrome, Firefox, or Edge with a stable internet connection.
My photo looks blurry when printed.
This usually happens when:
- The original photo resolution is too low — try uploading a higher resolution image (at least 1000×1000 pixels)
- Print scaling is enabled — make sure to print at 100% scale with no “fit to page” resizing
- Zoom is set too high — reduce the zoom level in the sidebar settings
The downloaded file will not open.
Make sure you have a program that can open the selected format. JPEG and PNG files can be opened by any image viewer. PDF files require a PDF reader like Adobe Acrobat Reader or your browser's built-in PDF viewer. If the issue persists, try downloading in a different format.
