The United Arab Emirates uses a distinct photo size for many identity documents: 43 × 55 mm(approximately 4.3 × 5.5 cm), taller than the standard 35×45 mm ICAO passport size used in Europe and much of Asia. This dimension applies to Emirates ID cards, many residence visa applications processed through GDRFA (Dubai) and ICP (federal), and several UAE passport workflows. 1. Which documents use 43×55 mm?

  • Emirates ID (new issue, renewal, replacement).
  • UAE residence visa stamping and renewal (Dubai GDRFA, other emirates via ICP).

Tourist visa applications through airlines or OTAs usually do not require you to supply a photo. Employment and family visa applications almost always do.   • Tuck long hair behind both ears before shooting.
  • Hijab and ghutra are permitted if the full face is visible; ears may be covered by religious dress in some accepted cases — verify with your typing centre for your specific application.
  • Large earrings are allowed but should not obscure the ear outline if ears must show.

4. Glasses, expression, and dress code

  • No glasses (prescription or sunglasses) for Emirates ID and most visa photos.
  • Neutral expression, mouth closed.
  • Modest clothing recommended; shoulders visible in frame.
  • No uniforms unless worn daily for religious or occupational reasons.
  • No heavy filters or AI face editing.

5. Typing centres vs online upload

Most residents in Dubai and the Northern Emirates use accredited typing centres to submit visa and Emirates ID applications. The centre often takes a fresh photo on-site, but many applicants pre-submit a digital file that must meet the spec before the appointment. Bring a printed backup set (four photos is common) even when uploading digitally — equipment failures at centres are routine.
